Taste Local Farm Fresh Meats At Festival

You’ve heard the old saying, “You are what you eat.” Ever stop to
consider that the same holds true for the animals that provide the
meat, eggs and dairy products you consume?

Mt. Laurel Organic Gardens will host a Farm Fresh Meats Festival July
24 to showcase how animals grown on a pasture-based diet are leaner, tastier and more nutritious.

Birmingham-area chefs will demonstrate how to prepare local farm-fresh meats such as chicken, beef, lamb, pork, goat and fish. An Alabama goat cheese producer and Alabama dairy will also be represented.

Clayton Sherrod, a well-known Birmingham chef and caterer who will be one of the chefs at the event, recently became a convert to grass-fed beef, calling it "some of the finest beef I've ever tasted in my life."

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Mt. Laurel Organic
Gardens south of Birmingham. There is no charge for the event, which
will also feature a petting zoo, farm tours, organic vegetables for
sale, and information about the Grow Alabama community supported
agriculture farmer-to-consumer cooperative.

Our farm fresh meats get a diet consisting primarily of the grasses
that they naturally live on,² says farm owner Jerry Spencer. ³The pigs,
for instance, are grown partially in the forest, which is their natural
rooting area.² This more nutritious diet makes for healthier and more
flavorful meats, he says.

Mt. Laurel Organic Garden is located off of Hwy. 280 south of
Birmingham. To get there, take Hwy. 280 east through Inverness, over Double Oak Mountain to County Rd. 41 (Dunavant Valley Rd.). Turn left (at the Town of Mt. Laurel sign) and go 1-1/2 miles. The farm is on the right, with parking available across the street. For more information, call (205) 991-0042.
